Dear Friends,

Today we celebrate the Assumption of Our Lady!

Pius XII solemnly proclaimed, in the Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus (1950), the dogma of the Assumption of Our Lady into heaven in body and soul. Mary was the first to fully live what we were all created for. In this way, he gives us the hope of getting there too, insofar as we open ourselves to God's grace and love.

August 15th has been celebrated in our country since ancient times. Ancient texts refer to Portugal as “Land of Santa Maria” and even the battle of Aljubarrota, the greatest symbol of our independence, was fought on the eve of “Nossa Senhora de Agosto”. From north to south of the country, from the interior to the coast, this day is celebrated in many towns, villages and shrines, through genuine manifestations of faith, expression of the soul of a people. This is, in fact, a festival of the “province”, rather than the “city”. By this time, many who are emigrating or living in urban centers return “to the land”, reviving ancestral traditions. In a mixture of popular and religious culture, countless Marian shrines spread across the country come to life.

Let's live like this, everything we are called to live!!

A huge HUUUUG! Fátima C. Brízio
