Dear Friends,

Today we celebrate the Restoration of Independence!

There were 120 conspirators who, on the morning of December 1, 1640, invaded Paço da Ribeira, in Lisbon, (where Praça do Comércio is currently located) to overthrow the Spanish dynasty that had ruled the country since 1580. Miguel de Vasconcelos, representing Castilian interests, was shot dead and thrown out of the window.

It was from the balcony of the Palace that the coronation of the Duke of Bragança, future King João IV was proclaimed, and it was also from there that the siege of the military garrison of the Castle of S. Jorge was ordered and the seizure of Spanish ships in the port .

By the end of 1640, all squares, castles and towns of any importance had declared their allegiance to the rebels.

The Restoration of Independence would only be recognized by the Spaniards 27 years later, with the signing of the Treaty of Lisbon.

A huge HUUUUG! Fatima C. Brízio
