WE celebrate ASH WEDNESDAY!

March 2, 2022

Dear Friends,

Ash Wednesday represents the first day of Lent in the Gregorian calendar!

“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you will return.”

On this day, the Church requests fasting and abstinence as a mark of a penitential time, of conversion. The traditional Mass of Ashes is celebrated. The ashes used in this ritual come from the burning of the blessed branches on Palm Sunday of the previous year. They have a symbolic character that refer to the fragility of human life: man, formed from the dust of the earth and whose being was received by the breath of God's life, will return to dust because of death, a consequence of sin. It is not a time of sadness, but, on the contrary, it is a time that must be understood in the light of the Faith, which Christ himself taught and lived. Jesus, on several occasions, shows the brevity of man's life, his fragility and the need to seek God.

"... In Lent time, open yourself to Divine action, cut the consumption of foods of animal origin and be moved by this pursuit of pleasure. For this escape from pain, embrace something that is a little more unpleasant and painful so that you can take the step, to go to God and let yourself be moved by God's grace." - Father Paulo Ricardo

Celebrating the Ashes is a sign that we want to give God more place in our lives, just as the first rays of spring sun drive away the winter cold!
