WE celebrate ASH WEDNESDAY!

2021

Dear Friends,

Today we celebrate ASH WEDNESDAY, starting LENT, the time that brings us peace, joy and happiness, because we are close to God!

In the Christian calendar, this day is celebrated 40 days before Easter, during which time the Church calls us to convert and truly prepare to live the mysteries of Christ's Passion, Death and Resurrection during Holy Week.

Today we start fasting and the ashes are imposed, which represent mortality and repentance for sins, humility.

The imposition of ashes is a sign of penance that already comes from the biblical tradition and has remained in the Church's customs until today, the condition of the sinful man is signified, who outwardly confesses his guilt before the Lord, expresses his will of conversion, trusting that the Lord will be kind and compassionate to him, patient and full of mercy. By this same sign, he begins the path of conversion, the goal of which will be reached in the celebration of the sacrament of Penance, in the days before Easter.

The LENT that begins today is the time of preparation for Easter, it is time for preparation, for instruction, it is time for:

Penance - Through penance our union with the mystery of the Lord's Cross is manifested. It can be lived at all times of the year, but especially during Lent and on Friday, because in it we especially remember the death of the Lord.

Fasting - Fasting is a deprivation of food or drink that is done with a sense of penance. There are only two days in the Liturgical Year declared as fasting days: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The first, as the beginning of Lent; the second is part of the Easter fast, since Good Friday is one of the three days on which the Lord's Passion and Resurrection is celebrated.

Abstinence - Abstinence refers to a diet that is simple, advised to Christians from the age of 14 and where, therefore, food and drinks that are expensive, luxurious and refined should be avoided. In Church tradition, abstinence was done by not eating meat every Friday, especially during Lent. In our time it can be done in other ways, at the discretion of each Christian.

"Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the earth ..." (Gn 2,7); “You shall eat bread with the sweat of your face, until you return to the land from which you were taken; because you are dust and you will return to dust. "(Gn 3,19)
